Scarpa Manta GSb (Spring 2009) $235.50
The Scarpa Manta is proof that in spite of all the high-tec offerings, the classic all-leather burly mountain boot is still alive. Tough and durable, but modern materials and construction have lowered the weight and improved the fit for spring '09. No wonder that such respected organizations such as NOLS and Outward Bound have it on their recommended list. Like the fit and function, but like the performance of Gore-tex? Check out the Scarpa Escape. Features: Crosta HS12 leather. Crosta is what Scarpa considers the "standard grade" of leather for mountaineering boots. HS12 is a special tanning process that makes the leather more water resistant, breathable, and faster drying than normal untreated leather. Midsole: Pro-fiber. The midsole is the hidden "engine room" of quality boots. Scarpa's Pro-fiber is for serious mountaineering, scrambling, and climbing. Stiff enough for crampons, but still maintains a degree of longitudinal flex for comfort during approaches. Weight: 1lb 13oz per 1/2 pair size 42 Fit: The Manta uses Scarpa's "DL" last. This is a much roomier fit than other Scarpa models. Width is best for wider feet(D or E), with a roomy toebox. Medium to high volume.
